Activity Director
"Certified" or "Qualified" - What's the Difference
Submitted by Sharon Inoue, ADC

The State of New Mexico requires every Activity Director to take a 40- hour course. Taking this course will QUALIFY you to be an Activity Director in New Mexico, so, after taking the 40- hour course and receiving a certificate, you are "qualified" to work as an Activity Director in New Mexico.

"Certified" refers to meeting the requirements set up by NCCAP- National Certification Council for Activity Professionals. There are currently five diferent tracks of education requirements, all of which include taking the MEPAP Part 1 course, along with others. Most tracks require MEPAP Part 1 and 2. Please visit the website at www.nccap.org for the specific requirements.

An important note- once you are NCCAP CERTIFIED, you will be authorized to use the professional designation "ADC" after your name. It means "Activity Director Certified". This designation is reserved for those Activity Directors who have been through the required educational process, and have received their certificate.

I encourage all of you to begin the process for NCCAP Certification. I will be happy to help anyone who wants it!

Please note!

As of 1/2007, ALL INITAL applications to NCCAP will require the entire MEPAP (180 hours of coursework/180 hours of practicum), not just the MEPAP Part 1. ALL individuals considering NCCAP certification that currently only have MEMPAP Part 1, will want to apply for certification ASAP, PRIOR to the standard changes that will take affect 1/1/2007. After 1/2007- those that have only MEPAP Part 1 will have to obtain MEPAP Part 2- in order to apply for the ADC or ACC levels.
